Action Alert - Mordecai Vanunu - release from solitary? Peace Movement AotearoaPO Box 9314, Wellington. Tel (04) 382 8129, fax (04) 382 8173, [email protected]Issued 13 March 1998 Kia ora Kate's list people, apologies for the lack of forwarded messages over the past week or so, this service will resume tomorrow - computers permitting ! We have been receiving messages since last Friday saying that Mordechai Vanunu has been released from solitary confinement, but according to Arthur Quinn (Lower Hutt-Waiwhetu Peace Group) this has still not been confirmed by the Israeli authorities who Arthur has been in touch with over the weekend. What is clear is that Mordechai has been allowed some freedom of movement within the prison, as per the message from Frederik Heffermehl below. From: Fredrik S. Heffermehl, Oslo (IPB, IALANA, Vanunu, Norw. Peace Alliance) Oslo, March 13, 1998 Israel: First step to freedom Thursday Israels nuclear whistleblower Mordechai Vanunu was permitted to mix with other prisoners for the first time, after nearly 12 years locked up in a tiny cell. - Now that his cell door is open, it is high time to open also the prison gate, said Fredrik S. Heffermehl (Norway)* of the International Vanunu Committee. With so many years spent in isolation, Vanunu has in reality served his 18 years many times over and should now be set free without further delay, said Mr. Heffermehl, pointing to official confirmations that today he is not a risk to Israels security. - A Parole Board that will meet shortly has the power to free Vanunu (after 2/3 time) and at the same time free the state of Israel from a major international embarassment before it celebrates its 50th anniversary in late April this year. A presidential clemency by that time is also a possible solution, said Mr. Heffermehl, who thanked Vanunus many supporters all over the world and asked them to reinforce their efforts to secure his freedom. Sincerely, Fredrik S. Heffermehl
